A new research preprint released on arXiv has introduced CriticGen, a fine-grained evaluation framework designed to provide actionable feedback for large language models (LLMs). The authors note that standard evaluation techniques are typically coarse-grained and decoupled from text generation, failing to guide concrete model improvements.
CriticGen operates by generating sample-specific evaluation dimensions and scoring rubrics spanning subjective, objective, and self-derived constraints. These rubrics are then used to concurrently produce a score, an explanatory rationale, actionable refinement steps, and an improved response.
Experimental benchmarks demonstrate that CriticGen achieved score correlations of 0.9556 Pearson and 0.9560 Spearman. Most notably, the generated feedback directly translated into performance gains, improving 73.17% of answers while maintaining a 93.28% non-degradation rate.
