Researchers have published a preprint examining how external skill artifacts, such as SKILL.md files, are curated and maintained for lifelong LLM agents. The study analyzed the commit histories of five public AI-tooling repositories from October 2025 to June 2026, covering 873 commits, 143 skill files, and 254 substantive edits.

The findings show that every substantive edit was authored or merged through a named human account, while 62% carried an AI co-author tag. The analyzed edits represented genuine curation, dominated by additions and corrections as tools and usage patterns evolved.

The authors conclude that skill maintenance for self-evolving agents currently functions as a human-governed, AI-assisted loop rather than an autonomous pipeline, providing released corpora and protocols to benchmark future automated curation systems.
